Nicole is a journalist working for a TV station in Vienna, Austria. In 2004, she travels to Bosnia to film a report about Edina, a young woman who has gone missing. Edina wanted to bury her Muslim father in Bosnia. His remains were discovered in a mass grave. Nicole`s search takes her to Morovci, the place where Edina was last seen. Morovci is located in Republika Srpska, a nation created after the war. It was a major site of ethnic cleansing, in which thousands of Muslim civilians perished. Nicole`s tenacious inquiries put her increasingly at risk. The fanatic nationalism and open aggression all around her make Nicole`s search a life-threatening mission.

After the tour through the burning palace (Burning Palace, 2009) Mattuschka brings us to an establishment that is fantastical, but at the same time typically Austrian. Early on in the film, the landlady points out to her cook that her histamine intolerance is but one of her many ailments, letting us guess already that this mysteriously-titled film will offer Freudian-schooled views into neurotically-wrought souls. We find ourselves in a building with several rooms that the internet-partner-search-obsessed landlady rents out to eccentrics working mainly in the arts: a masochistic art historian, musical twins, a dubious loner, and Michelangelo-inspired performance group. For us as viewers, this house of art is experienced through the perspective of “Gucki,” the landlady’s barefoot daughter who wanders through the rooms, her desire to have a look at times transforming to a tangible desire for flesh, while always preserving the dancer’s body control. In wonderful elegies, Mattuschka shows an artistic life void of class thinking, drafting in QVID TVM a utopia of devotion to art. And she does so maintaining the premise that while the shallows and quirks of this utopia’s inhabitants are observed in detail, they are never condemned. Only one must remain excluded; the dubious gallerist who it seems is only interested in crooked profiteering. As Mattuschka clearly wants to tell us, art that is a slave to the market, has no place in her building. (Andrea Braidt) Translation: Lisa Rosenblatt

Fanni has had enough of money and leaves to buy a tent. Anna has had enough of pigs and leaves the farmer – one needle in the hay. In the new game Fanni rolls the dice while Anna does not think twice, she knocks down all the pins. Together they raise their voice and shape one mutual tune. Differences attract each other, and jolly they move on – together on their distinct journeys, where their dreams are set – towards a new found liberty.

City Cinema Villach (“Stadtkino Villach”)

billy-roisz-performance-k3-villach.jpg

Since late 1990s, Billy Roisz dealt intensively with video and sound. Her work focuses on the links and gaps between visual and auditive perception. Roisz questions the interaction between sound and image, the interchangeability or unity of the electromagnetic signal in the generating machines which creates image or sound. The realisation of her experiments takes place in live performances, single screen works and audio-visual installations, solo or in collaboration with musicians of experimental music and noise as well as composed new and old music, dance and theatre.
